March Matchups: Hornswoggle vs. King Brian with Billy Barty as Special Referee

March Matchups has come out flying today with our second bout: Hornswoggle vs. King Brian from the Disney classic, Darby O’Gill and the Little People (1959). I decided to bring in a special guest referee and who better than the legendary late, great Billy Barty. Mr. Barty showed his toughness in the movie, Body Slam, but also showed to be pretty comical in Under the Rainbow. That movie was made in the early 1980s when Chevy Chase was still funny and not running after teenagers at a Knicks' game – a story for another time.

Hornswoggle, of course, is the very controversial star in the W.W.E. Some people love him, while some folks absolutely despise the comic relief he provides. I’m fine with him in - excuse the expression - small doses. But I hated seeing him win the Cruiserweight Championship and at this point his name goes as the last to hold that once prestigious title. Nonetheless, it breaks things up and wrestling is, of course, all about the entertainment.

King Brian (pictured above) was played by Jimmy O’Dea in the Darby O’Gill movie which starred Sean Connery. He is said to be able to grant three wishes and plays a cat and mouse game with Darby O’Gill throughout the movie. The real King Brian is Brian Boru who was a great warrior that became the King of Ireland in the 11th century. A movie is set to come out in the next year or two about his life and will star Leonardo Dicaprio.

Though Horny proves to be formidable, it’s pretty hard to overcome those of royalty, therefore King Brian is the winner of this match!
