Flashback: Ric Flair Joins The World Wrestling Federation
It was the summer of 1991 and Ric Flair had amazingly just gotten fired by Jim Herd, the president of World Championship Wrestling. Flair had a $25,000 deposit on the “big gold belt” which Herd refused to return to Flair. So the “dirtiest player in the game” took the title with him to the World Wrestling Federation.
Before he made his debut on television, Bobby “The Brain” Heenan showed up with the World Championship belt on t.v. I remember this angle very, very well and it is one of my two favorites since I have been watching wrestling. Vince McMahon really pulled off quite a maneuver by not only getting Ric Flair from the archrival W.C.W./N.W.A., but also the World Championship belt. A lawsuit ensued and eventually Ric Flair sent back the “real” World Championship and got his $25,000 deposit, as well. Enjoy the above video. The late Gorilla Monsoon (holding the microphone) and Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart do a great job of faking their shock at the appearance of the World Championship!
