Mark Messier has been hired as a special assistant to Rangers GM Glen “The Savior” Sather, as reported exclusively by the New York Post’s Larry Brooks yesterday. Brooks also stated that Messier interviewed for the head coaching position with Edmonton over the summer, before the job went to Pat Quinn.
It’s interesting to me because on one hand this means that Sather has appointed Messier as his successor. But it could also mean that head coach John Tortorella will be in the shadow of Messier all season. If and when Tortorella wears out his welcome – Christmas time anyone? – the calls for Mark Messier to replace Tortorella will be very loud.
This whole thing could get, uh, messy.
