It's Time For March Matchups!

Yes I know March is the month that many people think of college basketball and how their brackets will do. The conference tournaments start this weekend and I'm sure you are just ecstatic over Fairfield Basketball! Say something funny Mikey! Meanwhile, NHL and NBA teams get ready for their own tournaments coming up in April. But this is something different. All through the month of March I will present to you "March Matchups" where I will will analyze and rationalize who is better in such highlight matches as Pavel Bure vs. Jaromir Jagr; "The Battle of the Wrestling Broadcasters" where Gordon Solie will take on Jim Ross; the 2008 Presidential Race all done in March 2007; Patrick Roy vs. Martin Brodeur; Mark Messier vs. Gordie Howe; and many, many more all culminating on April 1 in honor of WrestleMania 23. On that day I will put together the ultimate "Triple Threat" match to find out who was the greatest pro wrestler of all time: Bruno Sammartino vs. Ric Flair vs. Hulk Hogan. So without any further delay - in the words of former UWF(the now-defunct Universal Wrestling Federation) boss Bill Watts - let's hook 'em up!

The Hot Dog vs. The Hamburger

OK fine not all of these great matches are going to be real serious. But that does not take away from the importance of such a contest. Look it's just a few months away from now. What's that? Summer of course. No more frantic weathermen providing "wall-to-wall" coverage of the big storm that never is. No more boots, hats, or gloves. No, instead you will surely be at a barbecue somewhere and someone will ask you if you want a hot dog or a hamburger. Now this is very important.

I love hot dogs. Sabrett and Hebrew National I think are top notch. There was a hot dog stand on Central Avenue in Scarsdale that used to serve the hottest and spiciest you could find anywhere. I'm not sure what brand the guy sold. But bet your life you needed something cold to drink after that and maybe something for the inevitable heartburn that would follow. The price of a hot dog usually ranges. Stadium and arena dogs (which generally are Sabrett) usually go for $3.50 to $4.25, sometimes more. At a local deli or a stand they range from $1.50 to $2.50. Hot dogs are not great for you with plenty of sodium and are made from all sorts of scrap meat.

So now let's turn our attention to the almighty hamburger. I recently saw on television that there are folks in New Haven, CT claiming that their city was the birthplace of the burger. In fact, they actually take it personally if you even dare to put ketchup, er excuse me, catsup on your dog. Anyway a burger to me has to be well-done; no red, no pink. If they do it just right it can be a bit crunchy but can never be overcooked to the point that it is rubbery. I'm not a big fan of McDonald's but their Big Macs are, from what I remember, great. White Castle makes those mini burgers which can never really fill you up but are as good as it gets. Especially if you are in college and it's late at night.

Here's my ideal burger: well-done, lettuce, tomato, and even though I love them, hold the onions. Usually I'll go with ketchup, but I have no prob with mustard or BBQ sauce.

My ideal hot dog is cooked just shy of the point where it would start to burn. Mustard and ketchup and sometimes relish. A toasted bun is always a plus for either a dog or burger.

So it's a long, hard fought match. But the winner is: The Hamburger. Wash it down with a huge Coke and some fries on the side and that's what I call "hitting the spot."

As always....

Stay Onsides!

A tough battle. Personally, I'll roll with the Dawg. Admittedly, I've never had Walter's, but I've had them from the guy with the cart in the middle of Ridgefield, and of course, the mighty Hubba. Then again, in the case of Hubba and others, it's the chili which is the necessary evil. Again, I find this battle to be a tough one.

You are right this was a tough one to call. Walter's is great if you can stand the long line. Some day we'll all have to go there, it would be a welcome change from the Horseneck! Ho ho!!
