"Pure and Easy" is one of my favorite songs by The Who, if for nothing else but its great lyrics.

The song is Track 10 of the Who's album - Who's Next and is the original version recorded at the Record Plant in New York on March 17, 1971. Pete Townshend said that his one regret about Who's Next was that "Pure and Easy" was not included when the album was first released. The song, which was included on the 1995 reissue of the album, is the basis for the Lifehouse project.

Who's Next is 40 years old this month. The album opens with "Baba O'Riley," whose name is derived from Pete Townshend's primary spiritual influence Meher Baba and minimalist composer Terry Riley. Townshend's college roommate Richard Barnes claimed on the DVD, Amazing Journey: The Story of the Who, that Pete put Baba's birth information into a synthesizer and it produced the loop for the song.

Daryl Hall and Todd Rundgren sing "I Saw the Light" during an episode of Live From Daryl's House, which in this case is actually from Todd's house in Hawaii. I really enjoy these two together and I've seen them both in concert; Todd Rundgren solo at the Tarrytown Music Hall and Hall and Oates in Bethel, N.Y. on the grounds of the original Woodstock concert. Incidentally, Hall and Rundgren played a show in May in Atlantic City. I'm sure most people that like these guys would love to see them do a full tour.

It's one of the weirdest and yet probably the best episode of Coast to Coast Am and it took place ironically enough on September 11, 1997. Art Bell took calls from those that were associated with or had been associated with "Area 51." One caller claimed to be a former employee and during the call he was cut off and Bell's show went off the air. The caller would later call back on a different show and say he was playing a joke on Art Bell, but the reason the show went off the air was never explained. Bell says that he had nothing to do with it, but the chances seem pretty unlikely. Anyway, it's a great episode with parts 1-6 below and then 7-12 can be found here.

Ray Manzarek of The Doors has said many times in interviews over the years that Jim Morrison would want to be remembered first and foremost as a poet. So with today being the 40th anniversary of Jim Morrison's passing I post The American Night, which from what I have read appeared on the original version of An American Prayer in 1978 but was not part of the remastered version that came out in 1995.

Not only a great poet, Jim Morrison was a tremendous singer, a genius, a fantastic songwriter and sadly a tortured soul. He has not been duplicated and never will be.

While wearing a "Stone Cold" Steve Austin t-shirt, CM Punk at the end of last night's Monday Night Raw cut one of the best promos I have ever seen! Punk's rant targeted many people including Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Hulk Hogan and the McMahon family and said after he wins the W.W.E. Championship at the Money in the Bank pay-per-view on July 17 he will defend it in either the New Japan Pro Wrestling or Ring of Honor wrestling promotion. Classic stuff.

Shortly after the show went of the air WWE.com announced that Punk has been "suspended" indefinitely. I read a couple of comments from some on Facebook that believed this was an outright "shoot," which is another way of saying it wasn't scripted. C'mon folks, nothing gets on W.W.E. t.v. without Vince McMahon's approval. Punk's last day is supposedly July 17 and if he leaves it will be a big loss. But I would imagine that he probably will return sooner rather than later.

In 1984, several promoters, including those from the National Wrestling Alliance and the American Wrestling Association teamed up to form Pro Wrestling USA, which aired weekly on WPIX channel 11 here in the New York metro area. The idea was to fight off Vince McMahon and the expanding W.W.E. Not surprisingly the promoters couldn't get along and thus Pro Wrestling USA was short-lived. But it still lives on in the glorious annals of Wikipedia here.

I've read some very good books recently, but I particularly enjoyed New Dawn: The Battles for Fallujah by Richard S. Lowry. He takes the reader inside everything that led up to and occurred during the two battles inside what was Iraq's most dangerous area at the time. Lowry gives the reader a very vivid description of the fighting and the strategy of the military. This was a book I could not put down! The soldiers that took part in these battles are people I would like to meet and THANK! The ones that were killed deserve our prayers.

I could name all of the soldiers that are mentioned in the book - because they are all incredibly brave- but one that stands out is a former U.S. Marine and that is Gunnery Sergeant Nick Popaditch. He was wounded in the first battle of Fallujah in April 2004 and lost his right eye and hearing in his right ear as a result of getting struck in the head by a rocket propelled grenade (RPG). Some may remember the picture of Popaditch on a tank smoking a cigar as his unit pulled down the statue of Saddam Hussein in April 2003.

As I was reading New Dawn and Popaditch's story was described, I stopped and thought and appreciated how great he and his fellow soldiers are. Inspiring is an understatement. This was something that happened for me several times while reading New Dawn; I would read a few pages and then just let the feeling set in that this was not a motion picture and was real life with real people.

Popadtich wrote a book entitled Once a Marine: An Iraq War Tank Commander’s Inspirational Memoir of Combat, Courage, and Recovery. I think I'll put that on my summer reading list.

I also finished reading the following:

Strange Days: My Life With And Without Jim Morrison by Patricia Kennealy-Morrison; a good book even though it took a while to get going. There is virtually no mention of the other band members which is a bit odd.

The Essential Rumi, new expanded edition, poems written by Sufi poet Rumi, translated by Sufi scholar Coleman Barks; I couldn't put this one down either.

Currently, I am reading Don Rumsfeld's memoir, Known and Unknown. Having read about 100 pages, it's too early for me to give an assessment of the book.

W.W.E. Signs Averno

The W.W.E. has signed Averno who currently works in Mexico with the CMLL promotion. Sin Cara was asked what wrestler in Mexico he would most like to work with and he suggested Averno. Averno's final match with CMLL will be on June 17 in a mask vs. mask match (which Averno presumably will lose) against La Mascara. Averno eventually will be put on Smackdown to work with Cara, but I would imagine he will first stop off in developmental and F.C.W. I wonder if he will face Peter Orlov, who formerly wrestled as Alex Koslov. The videos below show a tremendous match between Averno-Koslov.

Alberto Del Rio Entrance

I'm a big fan of Alberto Del Rio, mostly because of his entrance. First off, the guy has his own ring announcer and second he pulls up in a Bentley or some other very expensive car. Finally and most importantly, the guy can go in the ring. He also does a great job getting under the fans' skin.

It doesn't get much better than this. The video is of the theme used as the intro to all Coliseum Home Videos that the W.W.E. (W.W.F. at that time) put out during the 1980s. Highlights include The Cobra vs. the Black Tiger at Madison Square Garden for the vacant W.W.F. Junior Heavyweight Championship; Andre the Giant bodyslamming Kamala inside a steel cage; Ken Patera putting a swinging neckbreaker on Tito Santana (although on second look that may be Jim Powers) and Mike Rotundo giving an airplane spin to the Iron Sheik. Bryan Danielson vs. Kaval

This match is wrestling to me. T.N.A., which foolishly paid for "Wrestling Matters" billboards in the Stamford, Conn. area should take note and for that matter the W.W.E. should realize just how great wrestling can be. Before Bryan Danielson joined the main W.W.E. roster he spent some time in its developmental association, Florida Championship Wrestling (F.C.W.). Danielson and Kaval put on a classic match in the above videos which are from July 2010. Kaval was completely misused by W.W.E. during his stint last year where he won season two of NXT. Danielson has also not been utilized the way he should. In my opinion, Danielson, now known as Daniel Bryan, is one of the five best wrestlers in the world.

Randy Savage

As most wrestling fans know by now Randy "Macho Man" Savage died on May 20 at the age of 58. There are plenty of tributes on YouTube; the W.W.E. tribute which aired on Raw was particularly good. Also, BetweenTheRopes.com has some archived audio of Savage when he appeared on the BTR radio show. No question that Savage was one of a kind. His match with Ricky Steamboat at Wrestlemania III is still one of the most memorable matches in 'Mania history, but Savage's bout with the Ultimate Warrior at Wrestlemania VII should not be forgotten either. Warrior definitely had his best brought out of him that night.

I have always heard how great the fans are in Argentina. Well, here's proof of that. The above video is of Noel Gallagher playing an unbelievable version of "Don't Look Back in Anger" at a 2009 concert in Argentina. The fans are really into it. I don't think I hear anyone yelling "play Freebird," which is done so frequently at concerts in this country.

Noel Gallagher is just so great on his own, of course with Oasis he was pretty darn good also. This video goes back to 2007 at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the Teenage Cancert Trust charity concert. There is a DVD of this show which I have and is worth checking out.

Jeff Beck covers "A Day in the Life" which is off of The Beatles' 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Simon Townshend, Pino Palladino, Zak Starkey (Ringo Starr's son, in case you didn't know), John 'Rabbit' Bundrick, Billy Nicholls, and Jason Rebello back Mr. Beck.

By the way, Jeff Beck is going on tour and will be coming to the New York area later this month.

I haven't done this in a while, but I've got plenty to say about everything going on in the world of wrestling so let's have at it.

The build for The Undertaker versus Triple H at Wrestlemania is perfect right now. These are two veterans of the business and I'm sure they will bring the house down. I fully expect Hunter to be staring up at the lights when it's over, but I also think he and 'Taker will put on a match that will really give HHH his "Wrestlemania moment."

Last night, I finished reading Chris Jericho's book, Undisputed. It was a fantastic read and one that was hard to put down. Was it better than his first book, A Lions Tale? Hard to say as they are both excellent. I will tune in to at least the first episode of Dancing with the Stars to see how Jericho does. He's definitely an all-time favorite of mine.

When I read that the W.W.E. had signed Mexican superstar Mistico I was cautiously optimistic. I had heard before that he was coming and those reports turned out to be false. But, now that this is true - the W.W.E. is already running promos - there is plenty to be excited about. Mistico, now named Sin Cara, is one of the most exciting wrestlers in the business and if the W.W.E. can find some suitable opponents for him the fans will be in for quite a treat.

Is T.N.A. still in business?

Bad job out of the W.W.E. for not having a "Money in the Bank" ladder match at 'Mania.

It's a good Hall of Fame class this year. I get what the strategy is in terms of having one big star - this year it's Shawn Michaels - and then have guys (or gals) that are known but not in the upper echelon so the spotlight is on one individual and not spread around.

For the love of God, can we stop already with talk of Chris Benoit going into the Hall of Fame. Let's think about this for a second, who is going to induct him? Case closed.

Friend and WGCH colleague Rob Adams posted a video on his blog here of some new footage taken by a police helicopter on September 11, 2001. It's hard to watch, but I think it is important that any existing video of the events from that day are released.

In fact, it's difficult to see anything with the World Trade Center. A little while back I watched the video for Hall & Oates' hit song, "Say It Isn't So," which concludes with a shot of the World Trade Center.

Just to set things straight, the song was recorded in 1983.

Whalers Hockey Fest kicks off tonight at Rentschler Field in East Hartford. They are having plenty of different events for the next week before everything wraps up next Saturday night at 7 with the Connecticut Whale (formerly the Hartford Wolfpack) going up against the Providence Bruins. There is also an alumni game next Saturday between the Hartford Whalers and the Boston Bruins. I've seen some photos on Facebook (like the one above) and in my opinion they've got the place looking really good. For more click this.

Nice job by a YouTuber putting up only the piano part of "Yes, The River Knows" by The Doors. Of course, keyboardist Ray Manzarek is the one playing piano. I previously posted about the song here. It's interesting to read what people think a song is about. Songfacts.com is a pretty informative website for such things as, well, song facts and the site also contains many opinions which as usual range from the really thought proving to the really bizarre to the just comical. Click this to read what people have to say about "Yes, The River Knows." I don't think the song is about a murder as some have suggested. But I also believe that songs quite often are about more than one thing and that it really is left up to the listener as to what it means to them. Each person is different.

What an amazing song this is by The Doors. "Yes, The River Knows" comes off of the 1968 album, Waiting for the Sun. You would think after reading the lyrics that Jim Morrison wrote the song, but it was guitarist Robby Krieger that did the honors. By the way, he also wrote "Light My Fire" and "Love Her Madly." I have no idea what this song is about except it does contain the line, "I promised I would drown myself in mystic heated wine," which is a bit of a portent in regards to Morrison's life and how it would end.

Roger Daltrey On Jools Holland

Roger Daltrey appeared on Jools Holland's "Hootenanny," which is the New Year's Eve celebration of Jools regular U.K. show. Roger sang Muddy Waters' "Mannish Boy" with Jools and his R&B orchestra. By the way, I like this so much it's going up on both of my blogs.

According to Wikipedia, "it is a arrangement of (and an "answer song" to) Bo Diddley's "I'm a Man" (which in turn was inspired by Waters' and Willie Dixon's "Hoochie Coochie Man."

The Who sang "I'm a Man" which appeared on their 1965 album, My Generation. However, that album when released in the U.S. with a different album cover and was called The Who Sings My Generation. Strangely, it did not include "I'm a Man."

The Who are known for opening their concerts with "I Can't Explain" which was their first single and released in 1965. However, there was a time when they used to kick of their shows with "Heaven and Hell," which was written by John Entwistle. Hats off to the YouTuber who took the music and synced it up with the video of the band performing at Tanglewood in 1970.

What's Next for Brock Lesnar?

It was the video that got several million views in just a couple of days after it was posted on YouTube. The staredown between Brock Lesnar and The Undertaker after Lesnar lost his U.F.C. Championship to Cain Velasquez on October 23. Now there is further speculation about Brock possibly heading back to the W.W.E. for at least an appearance at Wrestlemania. Much of it may just be pure speculation, but Lesnar and his camp haven't done anything to stop the flames from spreading that he will make some kind of appearance at 'Mania.

By the way, mixed martial arts is real. I heard a sports commentator recently question the legitimacy of the sport. W.W.E. is staged, U.F.C. is real.

The former members, Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger and John Densmore got together in 1978 and recorded backing tracks over Jim Morrison's poetry that he recorded around 1970.
